The International Association of Lions Clubs began in 1917 back in Chicago and was a dream of Chicago insurance man Melvin Jones. His vision was to form clubs for the betterment of their community and the world rather than themselves... This concept caught on and clubs were formed all over the US and became International in 1920 with the first club in Canada. Soon clubs were formed in China, Mexico and Cuba, etc. In 1925, Helen Keller challenged Lions at their convention to become "Knights of the Blind" and Lions throughout the world answered with support for sight conservation.

Lions International is now the largest service organization in the world with over 1.4 million members in 205 countries and is the largest non-governmental agency associated with the United Nations.
